Dictionary of Sound-Alike Words
Selecting the right word when you write helps you communicate more clearly. Many words in the U. S. English language that business people use can be mixed-up with another word that sounds like it or looks
similar, such as right and write, or affect and effect.
I have listed 863 of these words, what they mean, and how to use them correctly in a sentence.
Look up a word
- Suppose you are not sure whether to use the word affect or the word effect.
- Find the letter of the alphabet that either of the words starts with (in this case, either A or E).
- Click on words next to the letter you chose.
- The Words page pops up. You find the word you want, and you click on it.
- The Definitions page pops up, open to the exact group of words you were looking for.
- You read the definiton of each word, and then the sentences using each word correctly. You decide which sentence most closely matches what you want to say. Now you know whether to use affect or effect.
